Hormones & Perimenopause

Understanding the changes before they throw you off balance.

Long before menopause itself begins, many women sense that something is shifting. Energy swings more sharply, stress feels more intense, sleep changes, and the body suddenly feels less "reliable" than it used to.

Because it happens gradually, these hormonal changes often go unrecognised for years. Perimenopause is the hormonal transition phase before menopause. It can begin in the mid-thirties or early forties and last several years.

During this time, oestrogen and progesterone — two hormones that influence far more than the menstrual cycle — begin to shift. Hormones affect:

When hormones start to fluctuate.

Many women first associate hormonal change with hot flushes or missed periods. But the earliest signs often appear much sooner — subtler and more complex.

Progesterone often begins to decline from the mid-thirties. As a result, many women become more sensitive to stress, sleep less well or feel more restless inside. At the same time, oestrogen tends to fluctuate more strongly in perimenopause, which can affect energy, mood, sleep and metabolism.

Many symptoms aren't "just ageing" — they come from the interplay of hormonal change, chronic stress and missing recovery.

Common symptoms can include:

Many women face high mental load in exactly this phase: career, family and responsibility meet a nervous system that reacts more sensitively to stress than before.

Your body isn't working against you.

Modern experts such as Dr Stacy Sims, Mary Claire Haver and Andrew Huberman increasingly emphasise that women in this phase don't need harsher pressure on their bodies — they need a better understanding of how hormones, the nervous system, nutrition, sleep and movement work together.
